The black female slave takes literary revenge: Female gothic motifs against slavery in Hannah Crafts’s "The Bondwoman’s Narrative"

2015

The Bondwoman’s Narrative is a novel that functions as a story made up from Hannah Crafts’s experiences as a bondwoman and thus merges fact and fiction giving a thoroughly new account of slavery both committed to reality and fiction. It is my contention that Hannah Crafts uses the female Gothic literary devices both to attack slavery and also to stand as a proper (African) American citizen capable of relating to th…

2022

Combating Caustic Communication with Truth and Beauty: Christianity Today, Beautiful Orthodoxy, and US Culture

2021

Embedded within a discussion of problems of definition and demographics, this chapter, this chapter highlights how Christianity Today Inc., one of the foremost evangelical periodical publishers in the United States, used communication etiquette both to appoint itself leader and custodian of evangelicalism and as a means of distinguishing evangelicalism from US American culture. Taking the financial crisis of 2008 as an opportunity, Christianity Today Inc. implemented a new policy, “One CT,” to streamline its products and rebrand journalistic fairness as an evangelical maxim. This chapter uses editorial material and interviews to discuss the policy’s overarching vision of Beautiful Orthodoxy…

Alan Moore's America: The Liberal Individual and American Identities in Watchmen

2011

core is an ensemble of diverse characters that explores fundamental issues for American national identity during the second half of the twentieth century. Moore’s work performs thi st ask in two ways, fi rstly, by presenting a group of diverse ideologically contingent American figures in the individual characters, and secondly, by highlighting a sacrosanct element of America’s image of itself, the primacy of the ‘‘liberal individual’’ not just as an American type but as the naturalized core of the national ethos. This article maps this subject identity into a national identity such as that typified in Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities ,as mall-n nationalism as a successor to kinship …
